What You Should Know About a Career in Medical Billing

Job opportunities related to medicine and health care continue to flourish, thanks in part to improved processes and new technologies. While demand for professional health care services remains high, certain job vacancies not directly related to care giving are waiting to be filled. One of these is in medical billing, a career that offers an essential service to the health care industry.

What Is The Nature of a Career In Medical Billing?

A Medical biller is known by different titles. These include: Billing Specialist, Billing Coordinator, Medical Collector, Claims Analyst and Reimbursement Specialist, among others. If you decide on a career as a Medical Biller, you will be working with medical personnel, medical facility office personnel and patients.

Successful candidates for medical billing jobs should be able to have a background or training that familiarizes them with anatomy, medical terminology and coding. They should also have competent typing skills and know basic computer operation and how to complete necessary medical forms.

Most medical billers are hired by hospitals, health care facilities, insurance companies, health care providers, private practice physicians, pharmacies, accounting firms and legal offices. However, there are also medical billers who work from home.

How Important Is a Medical Billing Job?

As more and more health care companies, medical facilities and insurance companies focus on managing resources and preventing fraud and abuse, demand for correct and accurate billing for medical services remains strong. Medical billers play an important role in ensuring that only correct billing information are included in each statement in order to guarantee honest and top quality services and to prevent legal problems that often arise from incorrect entries.

Training for a Medical Billing Career

Post-secondary training in the field is often required by employers. As such, it is important that you attain formal training from an accredited school or training center. Training usually lasts for at least 9 months while others can take as long as 2 years to complete.

Although certification as a medical billing specialist is not mandatory, it is an important step in your career. Many employers prefer medical billers to be certified by respected organizations as assurance of their competence.

The Future of a Medical Billing Career

Depending on the type of tasks assigned to you and your experience, pay for a Medical Biller can range from a low income of $8 per hour to a high income of $40 per hour. A career in medical billing also offers certain advancement opportunities. Many medical billers have gone on to become managers, supervisors and heads of billing, reimbursement or coding departments.

With this bright future foreseen in pursuing a medical billing career, it won't hurt to explore this field if you have the skills and interest.
