Utilize Your Skills & Passions for Home-Based Business Success
Wouldn’t you just love to get paid doing what comes naturally? Although this is a pipe dream for many, there are also individuals who have taken the risk to use their skills and passions to establish a successful home-based business. Take Cindy Poole, for example. Poole used to teach Physical Education but she leaned too much toward lifestyle to ignore the call of entrepreneurship. She finally gave in and built Section Enterprises, a home-based business that sells picture frames, jewellery, glasswork and sculptures, lead lighting, clay art, water features and giftware using copper foiling. She also accepts commissioned art work from both corporate and private clients. Poole says the business of a home-based venture can be challenging, especially since some people don't view it with much confidence. However, Poole's hard work may just change their minds – she won the Home-Based Business Award from the Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Esperance for two years in a row. She also became a Regional Small Business Award finalist. So how can you, like Poole, take your skills and interests and build your own successful home-based business? Follow these simple steps: Find out about your specific skills and passions. It's not enough that you have the interest to start a home-based business. You should be able to excel in it. Think back to the times when you were complimented on something you did really well – what was it? How was it done? Did you find it easy to do or did you need help? Do ideas come to you naturally or do you need a push? Make a list of these things, regardless of how insignificant they may seem to you. Next, consider what accomplishment gives you a sense of fulfilment. Sure, you might be an excellent accountant or kindergarten teacher but do you bask in your successes in your field? Or do you feel your accomplishments are not enough and that you have to be doing something else? Knowing what gives you satisfaction is an important clue to help you establish your own home-based business. Determine what it is exactly about your skills and passions that drive you and whether they're enough to sustain your enthusiasm to see your home-based business through. If your interest is the type that loses steam mid-flight, you might want to consider another business. Is work your passion? You might be surprised to find that your passion lies in what you already do. Many people have already stumbled upon their calling without their knowing it because they are too busy looking for something different. If you feel strongly about your current tasks and can actually produce excellent results, you might want to consider expanding your work to establish your own home-based business. It's actually more advantageous this way, since you already have the solid background, training, insider information and industry contacts. Consider how your skills and passions can translate to a viable product or service. So maybe you have a passion for frog skin leatherwear. But do other people share the same feeling? Take stock of what you can do well and see how it can be turned into a product or service that people will be willing to pay for. Prepare to make sacrifices. Is a home-based business generated by your skills and passions always perfect? Hardly. There are certain things you might have to put up with and some things you might have to let go of. As an entrepreneur, you might have to make compromises between what you regard as attractive and what your market prefers. If you have a thing for polka dots but your market is more interested in flowery prints, you just might have to abandon your preferences or at least use it in a minimal way. Study the ways you can create a product or service out of your skills and passions that people will be interested in. A little research can save you from headaches later on. Consider growth. Once you've found the exact skill and passion you have with which to establish your own home-based business, determine if it can be improved upon, altered, expanded or improved. This will help you foresee your business' future and how your product or service will perform under a different market. The ability of your home-based business to grow is also indicative of its adaptability, which means it can survive and progress. |
