Outdoor Pots & Planters by Inexterior Qld
By Cesar Campos
Space is really how you manage it. Just because you have limited space doesn’t mean you should have limited options when it comes to your garden or yard. You could still have lush plants and lovely blooms growing in no time, regardless of whether you could spare a thousand square meters of space or just manage a measly 20 square feet of workable yard. By using outdoor pots and planters, you can introduce a variety of plants in your yard. Better yet, you could also control their growth and use them to put accents at different spots. Here’s how to choose the best type of outdoor planters and plants for your garden, yard or patio: How Much Space Do You Have? How much available space you can use will determine the ideal size and quantity of outdoor pots and planters you need to buy. If you have a big space, you can pretty much buy as many pieces as you like and in different sizes. A large space also allows you to integrate big planters and pots without overwhelming the space, something you can’t do with smaller areas. If you’ll be working with small spaces, however, choose outdoor pots and planters in small to moderate sizes. What Types of Plants Do You Want to Grow? One thing to remember when choosing an outdoor pot or planter is that it should be suited to the kind of plant/s you have. Some plants have shallow roots and have slow to moderate growth. Others, however, require deep or wide containers to make room for roots. Before buying planters or pots, consider the kind of plants you will grow in them. Some plants are quite happy with small living spaces while others need room – lots of it – to grow. This is one important criterion you shouldn’t ignore, particularly if you want your plants to thrive and grow healthy. If your plant outgrows its planter, it could even cause cracks once the container fails to support the roots. Look for containers that provide sufficient room to grow. What Do You Want to Accentuate? Outdoor pots and planters are excellent for creating impact. Choose one that has the size and look that’s suited for the kind of effect you want. A large, deep red glazed pot, for example, can provide a stunning backdrop for leafy foliage and accentuate an otherwise empty patio while a group of brown clay pots will work against a colorful show of blooms. Look for colors that will work with the scheme or design you have in mind and don’t be afraid to be playful and eclectic – it’s your garden, after all. Look for The Right Outdoor Pot and Planter Material Outdoor pots and planters are made from clay, wood, ceramic, glass, fiberglass and even metal. Clay is a common material, very affordable and porous, so it will absorb water yet allow it to evaporate. Wood is beautiful, readily available and can adapt well to moisture and warm or cold weather. As long as it’s treated, it will resist rot. Ceramic, glass and fiberglass planters are breakable yet lovely; if glazed, they will retain water, so look for a planter or pot that has holes underneath to allow moisture to escape. Metal planters are very durable but heavy and non-porous. They can withstand winter conditions, however but care must be give to plants in the summer since this material absorbs heat. Choose Different Sizes It’s a common design misconception among homeowners that only same-size outdoor pots and planters should be used together. The truth is that placing different sizes of pots and planters actually create an interesting and surprisingly balanced look. Varying the set-up allows you to produce a more relaxed environment and play up different characteristics and textures. Look for complementing pieces, shapes and sizes that can be combined seamlessly.
